The present study aimed to investigate the impacts of different organic fertilizer application rates on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse located in Jiangsu, China, from March to May 2021. Four organic fertilizer treatment levels (0, 15, 30, and 45 t/ha) were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates.
The results showed that the application of organic fertilizer significantly affected the growth and yield of lettuce. Compared to the control (0 t/ha), the application of organic fertilizer at rates of 15, 30, and 45 t/ha resulted in increases in plant height, leaf number, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of the lettuce plants. The highest values for these growth parameters were observed in the 45 t/ha treatment.
Furthermore, the organic fertilizer application significantly increased the content of chlorophyll, carotenoids, and soluble sugars in the lettuce leaves. The 45 t/ha treatment had the highest levels of these biochemical parameters, which were 32.5%, 28.7%, and 27.4% higher, respectively, than the control.
The yield of lettuce also showed a positive response to the organic fertilizer application. Compared to the control, the 15, 30, and 45 t/ha treatments resulted in yield increases of 18.3%, 32.7%, and 46.5%, respectively. The highest yield was recorded in the 45 t/ha treatment, which was 46.5% higher than the control.
The findings of this study suggest that the application of organic fertilizer, particularly at a rate of 45 t/ha, can significantly enhance the growth, biochemical composition, and yield of lettuce. This information can be valuable for farmers and horticulturists in optimizing the cultivation of lettuce and improving its productivity through the use of organic fertilizers.
In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the beneficial effects of organic fertilizer application on the growth, biochemical characteristics, and yield of lettuce. The results highlight the potential of organic fertilizers as a sustainable approach to enhance the productivity of lettuce cultivation. Further research on the long-term effects of organic fertilizer application and its impact on soil health and environmental sustainability would be valuable.
